Dutch Souvenirs That Won't Break the Bank

The best Dutch souvenirs aren't in the shops around Dam Square. They're in the everyday stores locals actually use. Leave time between canal tours and patio hopping for a little shopping - there are so many wonderful dutch treasures.

After living in the Netherlands for over two years, I've learned that local shops are full of wonderful (and affordable) Dutch treasures that make perfect gifts to bring home. Here's where to find them.

HEMA

This much-loved Dutch department store is a must. Pick up cheerful tea towels with Dutch designs, plus adorable Miffy (Nijntje, as she's known here) merch. Both are light, easy to pack, and unmistakably Dutch.

Action

Action is the ultimate Dutch bargain store. Look for the little canal-house candles and home décor, and keep an eye out for the seasonal gnomes that pop up throughout the year. It's easy to walk out with an armful of gifts for very little.

Albert Heijn (or any Dutch grocery store)

The supermarket is where you'll find the Dutch flavours people actually eat at home:

  • Stroopwafels: thin waffle cookies with caramel syrup in the middle

  • Hagelslag: chocolate sprinkles the Dutch put on buttered bread for breakfast

  • Speculaas: spiced cookies that are especially popular in autumn and winter

  • Chocoladeletters: chocolate letters traditionally given for Sinterklaas

Antique markets

For something truly special, hunt for vintage Delft Blue pottery at an antique market. Every piece has its own story, and it's a far more meaningful find than the mass-produced versions in souvenir shops.

Don't miss the Albert Cuyp Market

While you're out shopping, wander the Albert Cuyp Market in De Pijp, Amsterdam's most famous street market. Grab a warm stroopwafel made fresh in front of you and soak up the local buzz.

Pro tip: Chocoladeletters are seasonal and usually hit the shelves in the autumn. Grab one with your initial for a very Dutch keepsake.
