About This Trip
Amsterdam at Your Own Pace
While Amsterdam is chock full of museums, tours and sites, it is also a vibrant city where people are out enjoying a drink on patios — even in winter (expect heaters and blankets at the ready). It would be a shame to pack your itinerary without taking time out to take in the views and watch the world go by.
With limited time, pick 3 of your must-do activities and allocate ample time for spontaneous adventures, leisurely patio time and exploring the city's neighbourhoods.
The 3 Neighbourhoods
One Neighbourhood Per Day
Day 1
de Wallen (Centrum)
The historic heart of Amsterdam — canals, bridges, the famous red-light district and the iconic Anne Frank Huis. Start your adventure here.
Day 2
de Pijp
A lively, bohemian neighbourhood known for the Albert Cuyp Market, great restaurants and a real locals-first atmosphere. Perfect for wandering.
Day 3
Jordaan
Arguably Amsterdam's most charming neighbourhood — narrow streets, boutique shops, independent galleries and the best patio spots in the city.
The Long Weekend, Day by Day
Your Itinerary
A suggested flow for each day — built around the neighbourhoods, not against them.
Day 1
de Wallen
Amsterdam's historic heart — canals, bridges, centuries of stories. Start here to get your bearings. The city will feel smaller and more familiar by evening.
9 AM
Morning
Guru Walk Tour
Start your first morning with a free walking tour — the best possible introduction to the city. A local guide walks you through de Wallen, the canals and the stories that make Amsterdam what it is. Two and a half hours very well spent.
GuruWalk Toursde Wallen
Check the GuruWalk app for start times. Pay what you feel at the end — they earn it.
12 PM
Afternoon
Lunch, canals and your first patio
Grab lunch at Dwaze Zaken — relaxed, central and perfectly placed for an afternoon of wandering. Cross every bridge that looks interesting. This is the part of Amsterdam most people rush past trying to get somewhere else.
Dwaze ZakenCanal streetsDam Square
When you find a patio in the sun — sit down. This is Amsterdam working as intended.
4 PM
Late afternoon
Canal cruise
Seeing Amsterdam from the water is a completely different perspective. Late afternoon light is particularly beautiful on the canal houses and bridges. Book a guided cruise or rent a small boat and do it yourself.
Canal Cruise
Self-drive boat rentals are available and surprisingly easy. No licence needed for smaller boats.
7 PM
Evening
Dinner at Restaurant Olijfje
End your first day with one of the best meals on the itinerary. Warm, unhurried Mediterranean cooking that earns every one of its reviews.
Restaurant Olijfje
Book ahead — it fills up. Closed Sundays, so plan accordingly.
Day 2
de Pijp & the Museums
Amsterdam's most bohemian neighbourhood in the morning, world-class museums in the afternoon, then Shiraz on the walk back. A full day that flows naturally.
9 AM
Morning
Brunch at De Wasserette, then Albert Cuyp Markt
Start at De Wasserette for one of the best brunches in the city. Afterwards, step straight into Albert Cuyp Markt — one of Europe's largest street markets. Food, flowers, clothing, cheese and a hundred things you didn't know you needed.
De WasseretteAlbert Cuyp Markt
Market runs Mon–Sat. Get there by 10am before the crowds build.

Midday
Sun or shade — your call
Choose your afternoon
☀️
If the sun is out
Take your market snacks to Sarphatipark — de Pijp's local answer to Vondelpark. Sit, watch the city, do nothing for a while.
🌧️
If it's overcast
Head to Foodhallen — Amsterdam's best indoor food market in a converted tram depot. Dozens of vendors, great atmosphere, no agenda required.

Afternoon
Museumplein — pick one and give it time
Head to Museumplein for the afternoon. Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum and Moco all sit within minutes of each other. Pick one and give it the time it deserves.
Van Gogh MuseumRijksmuseumMoco Museum
Book tickets online — Van Gogh and Rijks sell out. Queues at the door can be very long.
5:30 PM
Evening
Shiraz on the walk back
Shiraz Jardin des Vins is an easy walk from Museumplein. Over 600 wines, warm French atmosphere, staff who genuinely love what they pour. Stay for a glass or three.
Shiraz Jardin des Vins
Opens 3pm weekdays, 2pm weekends. Closed Mondays. No reservation needed for drinks.
Day 3
Jordaan & Anne Frank Huis
Arguably Amsterdam's most beautiful neighbourhood — narrow streets, independent shops, the best patio culture in the city, and the most important museum visit of the trip.
9 AM
Morning
Anne Frank Huis — first thing
Go first thing. Crowds build throughout the day. Allow a full two hours — the audio guide is excellent and the rooms deserve unhurried attention. If you only visit one museum this trip, make it this one.
Anne Frank Huis
Tickets open 6 weeks ahead on Tuesdays and sell out within hours. Book the moment they go on sale.
11:30 AM
Late morning
Coffee and into Jordaan
Step out and you're already in the heart of Jordaan. Find a coffee nearby and let the neighbourhood absorb you. The streets between the canals here are as good as Amsterdam gets.

Afternoon
The 9 Streets
Nine short streets connecting Jordaan's canals, lined with boutiques, vintage shops, independent bookshops and galleries. The kind of shopping that doesn't feel like shopping.

Give yourself two hours to wander properly — it's compact but easy to linger.
4 PM
Late afternoon
Spui Square — a local favourite
A quiet, bookshop-lined square with good café terraces, popular with locals. Not to be confused with the busier Rembrandtplein — Spui has a much more relaxed, local feel.
Spui Square
7 PM
Evening
Dinner at Foodhallen
The right call for a relaxed last evening. No decisions about cuisine, no pressure. Grab drinks at the bar, graze across vendors, stay as long as the evening allows.
Foodhallen
Open until midnight on weekends. Come before 7pm for a seat without hovering.
Day 4
Your Day
No agenda. A slow morning, a last wander, and whatever you didn't get to. Amsterdam is best when you're not trying to finish it.
9 AM
Morning
A proper slow breakfast
No rushing today. Find a café, order coffee and something good, and sit with it. If you're near de Pijp, De Wasserette is worth a second visit.

Last wanders
Go back to whatever you left too quickly
Pick the neighbourhood you felt you left too quickly and return. Or find a canal bench and watch Amsterdam go by. The city doesn't need to be ticked off — it needs to be sat in.
Wherever calls you back
Leave more time for the airport than you think. Schiphol security can be slow — the train is 20 minutes from Centraal Station.
If time
Didn't make it?
A few things worth squeezing in
If you have a spare morning before your flight, here's what's most worth fitting in.
Heineken Experience
Fun and interactive — allow two hours. Book ahead. The rooftop bar is the highlight.
A second museum
If you only hit one on Day 2, Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum are both worth a full morning.
De Friet + a canal walk
Amsterdam's best frites in a cone, eaten while walking along a canal. Simple and exactly right.
Sarphatipark picnic
If Day 2 was rainy — grab something from Albert Cuyp and head to the park.
The dutch patio game is strong! If the sun is out, the patios will be hopping. Between the walking tour and canal cruise, take time to sit and enjoy watching the world go by — this is what Amsterdam is truly about.
