For Canadians, a visit to these battlefields is something else entirely. The Battle of Vimy Ridge stands as a defining moment for our country — the day four divisions fought together for the first time, and Canada came of age on the world stage. Beaumont-Hamel, by contrast, is the heartbreaking reality of the immense loss of the Great War, where the Newfoundland Regiment was nearly wiped out in a single morning.
If you want more time in the region, splitting your stay between France and Belgium makes sense. But basing yourself in Lille and taking full-day trips out to the battlefields keeps things simple — and gives you a lively, walkable city to come home to each night.

You'll need a car to properly visit the WW1 sites — unless you arrange a private guided tour, which is a great option if you'd rather not drive yourself.
