🌸 Travel Tip — Festivals & Timing
Spring in Andalucía means wonderful weather — and two unmissable festivals: Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Feria. Both are spectacular, but both bring serious crowds, especially to Sevilla. Before you book, check the dates. If you want atmosphere, lean in. If you want quiet streets, plan around them.

Southern Spain at Your Own Pace

Southern Spain rewards those who don't rush it. This route moves from the dramatic gorges and wine country of Ronda to the Moorish splendour of Granada, a swift stop in Córdoba's remarkable old city, and three nights in the vibrant streets of Sevilla. Wine threads through every stage — from Ronda's boutique mountain bodegas to Granada's famous free-tapa culture and Jerez's legendary sherries.

Pick your two or three must-do moments in each city and leave the rest open. The best discoveries in Andalucía are the ones you stumble into on a cobbled side street with a glass of something cold.

One City at a Time

Days 1–4
Ronda
Perched above a dramatic gorge, surrounded by vineyards. Walk the Puente Nuevo, explore the wine route and day-trip to Gibraltar.
Days 5–7
Granada
The Alhambra, the Albaicín and the best tapas crawl culture in Spain. Every drink comes with food — cobbled lanes, Alhambra views overhead.
Days 8–9
Córdoba
A shorter stay but one of Spain's most extraordinary cities. The Mezquita at dusk, then a morning in the Montilla-Moriles wine region.
Days 9–12
Sevilla
Flamenco, the Alcázar, riverside tapas bars and an optional day trip to Jerez for sherry. The liveliest finish to a magnificent trip.

Your Itinerary

A suggested flow through each city — built around wine, culture and the places worth lingering in.

Days 1–4 · Ronda
Wine + Town + Day Trips
Arrive from Sevilla, settle into the Catalonia Reina Victoria and let the landscape do the work. Four nights — more than most give it, and exactly enough to do it properly.
Day 1
Arrival
Arrive from Sevilla — stop in Setenil de las Bodegas
If driving or using a car service, plan a stop in Setenil de las Bodegas — a remarkable white village where houses are built directly into the rock overhangs above the river. Arrive in Ronda, settle in at the hotel and enjoy the view. Walk to town for tapas and wine.

Spend the day wandering Ronda properly. Walk to the main sites — the Puente Nuevo and old bridge, the Arab Baths, the bullring. Set up a wine tasting at Samsara Wines — the view is amazing, the wine is excellent, and the winemaker is genuinely passionate. Hike back up to the top of the bridge and continue your wandering.

Dinner featuring Montilla-Moriles wines. Don't miss Taberna No. 10 — their salmorejo con jamón ibérico (a thick chilled tomato soup with Iberian ham) is exceptional. And ask any local bodega for a Fitifiti — Córdoba's quintessential cocktail: half dry Fino wine, half Pedro Ximénez, perfectly balanced. Bodega Guzmán is the classic spot.
Day 9

Morning detour to Montilla-Moriles — just 30 minutes south of Córdoba. Bodegas Alvear (founded 1729, legendary Pedro Ximénez) and Pérez Barquero (superb finos & amontillados). Train to Sevilla (~45 min, 34€). Check in, evening tapas in Triana.

Option B — Sevilla
Mercado Lonja del Barranco, Metropol Parasol, easy riverside afternoon. If the weather is great, end the evening on the hotel rooftop patio — relax or take a quick swim. A perfect last night in Spain.
Day 12
Departure
Coffee by the Guadalquivir
A slow morning coffee by the river, then transfer to Sevilla airport for your flight home.
Sevilla airport is ~30 minutes by taxi. Don't linger too long over that last cortado.
Andalucía does not need a tight schedule. The best moments arrive when you stop looking for them — at a bar with no name, on a square you weren't trying to find.

How to Move Through the Route

Spain's train network is fast, cheap and genuinely enjoyable. You don't need a rental car for this trip — with one important exception.

🚆 Trains Between Cities
Fast, cheap and easy
Great train services connect Granada, Sevilla, and Córdoba. In most cases, taking the train is as fast or faster than driving — and far less stressful. Book on Renfe.com.
✈️ Arriving in Sevilla
Airport → Train Station
If you fly into Sevilla airport, you'll need to get to Santa Justa train station first. You can take a bus or a taxi from the airport — both are straightforward.
🚗 Sevilla → Ronda Exception
Consider a car service
Getting from Sevilla to Ronda by train takes much longer than driving. We splurged on a car service right from the airport — it saved time and some services (like Day Trip) allow a stop in one of the white towns along the way.
🪪 Rental Car? Get an IDP
International Driver's Licence required
If you rent a car, an International Driver's Permit is legally required in Spain. Get it before you go from CAA (Canada) or AAA (US) — it's fast and easy to obtain in person. Rental agencies may not check, but if police stop you without one, the car may be impounded.
📅 When to Go
March–May or Sept–Oct
Avoid July–August — Andalucía hits 40°C+. Spring and autumn are warm, beautiful and far quieter.
🎟️ Book Ahead
Alhambra First
Nasrid Palaces sell out months in advance. This is the most important booking of the entire trip.
🚗 Getting There
Fly Sevilla, Return Sevilla
Rent a car for the Ronda leg, then use trains. Spanish rail is fast, affordable and a delight to use.
