About This Trip
Slovenia at Your Own Pace
sLOVEnia. The name says it all — and the country lives up to it completely. Within a two-hour drive from the capital, you can be swimming off the Mediterranean coast, sipping gorgeous wine among rolling hills, hiking in the Julian Alps or watching the sunset over a glacier-fed lake. Slovenia is one of the most underrated destinations in Europe, with something for every type of traveller — at an incredibly reasonable price tag.
The short distances make it easy to combine very different experiences in a single trip. In a week you can go from coastal relaxation to mountain scenery to wine country to a lively city — without rushing. Decide what matters most to you, then give yourself permission to linger.
The Route
One City at a Time
Days 1–2
Piran
A perfectly preserved medieval port town on the Adriatic. Wander the Venetian lanes, jump off the boardwalk for a swim, and watch the sun sink into the sea from a rooftop bar.
Days 3–4
Goriška Brda
Slovenia's wine heartland — rolling hills, honey-stone villages and some of the most distinctive whites and orange wines in Europe. Stop at Predjama Castle en route for one of the world's most dramatic detours.
Day 5
Lake Bled
The postcard image of Slovenia — a glacial lake, a clifftop castle, a church on an island. Worth at least one night. For fewer crowds, nearby Lake Bohinj is equally beautiful and barely discovered.
Days 6–8
Ljubljana
A compact, walkable capital with a river running through it, lined with patios and the best of Slovenia's growing gastro scene. Energy is young, relaxed and easy to love.
The Route, Day by Day
Your Itinerary
A suggested flow through each city — built around wine, culture and the places worth lingering in.
Days 1–2 · Piran
Coast, Sunsets & Swimming from the Boardwalk
A medieval port town that belongs to the sea. Wander the Venetian lanes, jump in wherever you find a spot along the boardwalk and watch the sun sink into the Adriatic from a rooftop bar.
Day 1
Arrival
Arrive & Explore Piran Old Town
Check in and start walking. Piran is wonderfully compact — the medieval lanes lead naturally to the boardwalk, Tartini Square and the water. Take a short walking tour to get your bearings or simply follow the sea.
Piran Old TownTartini SquareBoardwalk
Wear your swimming costume under your clothes. You can jump off the boardwalk rocks almost anywhere along the waterfront — on a hot day it is a very good idea.
Day 1
Evening
Sunset at the Hotel Piran Rooftop Bar
The Hotel Piran rooftop bar is one of the best spots in town for a sundowner. The view over the Adriatic is spectacular and the vibe is coastal chic — a DJ spinning cool tracks as the sky turns pink and orange.
★ Hotel Piran Rooftop Bar
Then find a restaurant along the boardwalk for dinner — watching the last light fade over the water is the perfect ending to day one.
Day 2
Morning
Boat Tour Along the Coast
A morning boat tour along the Slovenian Riviera gives you a completely different perspective on Piran and the coastline. The Adriatic is calm and clear, and the limestone cliffs look entirely different from the water.
Piran Boat ToursSlovenian Riviera
Day 2
Afternoon
Beach Day + Stara Gostilna for Lunch
Book a beach chair and settle in for an afternoon of reading, swimming and doing very little productively. For lunch, Stara Gostilna is a Michelin-starred restaurant with a lunch deal that makes the experience genuinely accessible — a splurge that does not feel like one.
★ Stara Gostilna (Michelin lunch)Barbara Piran BeachPortoroz sandy beach
Airbnb options in Piran are limited — if you want an apartment rather than a hotel, book early. The Barbara Piran Beach Hotel and Spa has excellent beach facilities if you want a more organised beach day.
Days 3–4 · Goriška Brda
Wine Hills, Predjama Castle & the Soča River
Slovenia's most beautiful wine region — rolling hills, honey-stone villages and some of the most distinctive whites and orange wines in Europe. En route, Predjama Castle is one of the most extraordinary stops in the country.
Day 3
En Route
Predjama Castle & Postojna Caves
On the drive from Piran to Goriška Brda, stop at Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle — a medieval castle built into a cave mouth in a sheer cliff face. It is one of the most dramatic sights in Slovenia and genuinely unforgettable. Start at the caves, take the shuttle to the castle.
Postojna CavesPredjama Castle
Book both the cave and castle tickets well in advance in summer — they sell out. Bring a sweater for the caves, which stay cool year-round.
Day 3
Afternoon
Arrive in Goriška Brda — Explore Smartno
Check in to Belica Estates and settle into the hills. Head to Smartno — a beautifully preserved medieval village and the hub of the local wine scene. Visit Vinoteka Brda, the excellent local wine shop, to pick up bottles and book winery tastings for the next day.
Smartno village★ Vinoteka BrdaBelica Estates
Vinoteka Brda is closed Mondays and Tuesdays — plan around this. The staff can point you to the best wineries and help book appointments. In July some wineries close for the owners' own holidays.
Day 3
Evening
Dinner at Belica + Infinity Pool
The restaurant at Belica Estates is exceptional — and remarkably affordable. The gnocchi alone is worth the stay. Afterwards, sit by the infinity pool with a glass of their house wine and watch the evening settle over the valley. This view never gets old.
★ Belica Estates Restaurant
Belica also cures their own meats — there is always access to charcuterie and a chilled bottle of local wine. A very civilised arrangement.
Day 4
Morning
Day Trip to Kobarid & the Soča River
Drive to Kobarid for a morning at the Soča River — one of the most extraordinary colours of water you will ever see. An impossible turquoise-green runs through white limestone gorges. Don't attempt the town hike in summer heat — drive to the viewpoints and explore from there. Napoleon's Bridge just outside Kobarid is stunning.
★ Soča RiverNapoleon's BridgeKobarid
There are two great viewpoints: Napoleon's Bridge right outside Kobarid, and the Soča River Viewpoint a little further along. Both have parking nearby. People swim and sun on the rocks in the shallow sections.
Day 4
Afternoon
Winery Visits in Goriška Brda
Return from Kobarid for booked winery visits in the afternoon. Movia and Klinec are both outstanding. The wines here — whites, reds, rosé and skin-contact orange wines — are largely unavailable outside Slovenia, which makes tasting them here feel genuinely special.
★ Movia Wines★ Klinec Medana
Consider booking a tour that includes a driver — the hills are beautiful to drive but having a designated driver means you can taste more freely. Ask at Vinoteka Brda for recommendations.
Day 5 · Lake Bled
The Most Beautiful Drive in Slovenia
The drive from Goriška Brda to Lake Bled through the Julian Alps is one of Slovenia's great experiences — twisting mountain roads, breathtaking views at every turn. Then the lake itself: turquoise water, a clifftop castle, a church on an island.
Day 5
Morning Drive
Scenic Mountain Drive via Most na Soči
Leave Goriška Brda in the morning and take the mountain route to Lake Bled via Most na Soči. This is not the fastest route but it is by far the most beautiful — ascending into the Julian Alps with views that make you want to stop every five minutes.
Most na SočiJulian Alps
The fastest route goes via Ljubljana but misses the point entirely. Do the mountain drive — the extra time is completely worth it.
Day 5
Afternoon
Arrive at Bled — Boat Ride, Swim & Famous Cream Cake
Arrive in time for lunch — try the famous Bled cream cake (kremna rezina) at one of the lakeside cafés. Then take a traditional pletna boat ride to the island church, or rent a boat and explore the lake yourself. The water is clear enough to swim in and surprisingly warm in summer.
★ Lake Bled boat rideBled Island ChurchBled cream cake
For fewer crowds and an equally beautiful setting, Lake Bohinj is just 25km away and far less visited. If you have an extra day, it is worth the detour.
Day 5
Late Afternoon
Drive to Ljubljana
After a morning leisurely stroll around the lake, it is an easy, short drive from Lake Bled to Ljubljana. Drop off the car and check in to your apartment — the city is entirely walkable from here.
Fine Ljubljana Apartments
Bled Castle sits on a cliff above the lake and has great views — worth a quick visit, though as castles go it is not the most remarkable interior. Go for the panorama.
Days 6–8 · Ljubljana
Patios, Markets & a River That Runs Through Everything
Ljubljana is exactly the right size for a city — small enough to walk everywhere, lively enough that there is always something happening. The river is the heartbeat: lined with patios, willows and some of the best people-watching in Central Europe.
Day 6
Arrival + Afternoon
Walk the River & Find Your First Patio
Check in to your apartment and start walking. Follow the Ljubljanica river and stop at whatever patio catches your eye. The energy along the waterfront is relaxed and infectious — no agenda required.
Ljubljanica RiverfrontFine Ljubljana Apartments
The castle funicular is fun — the views from the top are excellent. The castle interior is pleasant but not unmissable. Don't feel obligated to do the full tour.
Day 7
Full Day
Day Trip to Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle
If you did not stop on the way to Goriška Brda, Ljubljana makes an excellent base for a day trip to Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle — just 45 minutes away. Book tickets in advance or join one of the many organised day tours from the city.
Postojna CavesPredjama Castle
GetYourGuide and similar platforms run well-priced day tours from Ljubljana that include transport — a great option if you have already returned your rental car.
Day 8
Final Day
Markets, Old Town & a SUP on the River
Visit the Central Market — great for local crafts, Slovenian honey, ceramics and wine to bring home. Wander Ljubljana Old Town and the castle area. For something active, try a stand-up paddleboard tour along the river — a fun way to see the city from a different angle.
Central MarketLjubljana Old TownLjubljana CastleSUP River Tour
Slovenia makes beautiful things: ceramics, honey, wine and jewellery. The Central Market and the shops in Old Town are the best places to find genuinely local gifts to bring home.
Slovenia does not try to be anything other than what it is. That is exactly what makes it so extraordinary.

Getting Around
How to Move Through the Route
A car is essential for getting the most out of Slovenia. The distances between regions are short, the roads are easy to drive, and some of the best experiences — the mountain drive to Lake Bled, the Soča River viewpoints, the Goriška Brda wine roads — are only accessible by car. Pick up your rental at Ljubljana airport and drop it off there at the end of the trip.
