Don't Let FOMO Ruin Your Vacay
Don't let FOMO Ruin Your Vacay!
I was recently planning a trip to NYC and started scrolling on Insta looking for inspiration on what to do. I was quickly inundated with reel upon reel of the "must-sees" and "must-dos". The "must-see" stops for one day in New York was comical. There was so many stops from Brooklyn to Queens to Central Park to Chelsea to Chinatown. I am exhausted just typing this. Either you are literally doing Amazing Race pit stops to get your Insta shot or be prepared for a 5 am wake up call!
Inundated with "the musts", I was overwhelmed. And I always fell for clickbait. I mean , what if there is a new MUST that I am going to regret I if I don't see or do?? Just one more must list...the FOMO is real.
Deep breaths.
And here's what I do to get over the FOMO.
Don't ever START planning using soundbites.
Start with how you like to travel most - and be true to that! Do you like to pack-it-all-in and sleep in and savour your coffee? What brings you joy and helps you unwind?
Then - for this trip - what do you want to do most? When you come home, what will make you say - yes that was awesome!
Acknowledge that your time is limited and your time is valuable. You will not be able to do it all so make sure, first and foremost, you are doing something you enjoy instead of something that you think is a MUST do.
Travel is supposed to be fun and it is supposed to be an experience - not a series of I "have-to".
My NYC list for this whirlwind 48 hour trip? Enjoy NYC in all its Christmas glory. Check out a few Christmas markets. Eat great food and discover a new place for a cool cocktail. People watch and go-with-the-flow.
With that in mind, suddenly the insta-reels became inspiration not "must-dos".
