Welcome to Across the Rock — 11 days, 10 nights, and approximately zero regrets.

Day 1–3: St. John's Throws a Party (and You're Invited)

You'll land in St. John's and immediately understand the assignment. This is Canada's oldest city, and it wears its personality on its sleeve...literally, if you count the rainbow rooftops of Jellybean Row.

Spend your first few days doing it right:

• George Street after dark, where the local brews flow and the music never seems to stop

• A whale-watching tour, because humpbacks the size of school buses breaching offshore is just a normal Tuesday here

• Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America — stand there and you're closer to Ireland than to Toronto

• If you time it for Canada Day, catch the military ceremony and let the fireworks do the talking

Rest your head at the Courtyard Marriott for easy comfort, or go full charm offensive at a B&B like Mallard Cottage.

Day 4–6: Trinity and Bonavista — Newfoundland's Prettiest Postcards

Hit the highway (well, the road — it's Newfoundland, "highway" is a strong word) toward Trinity, a town so photogenic it should have its own Instagram manager. Walk the Skerwink Trail for coastal views that will absolutely wreck your camera roll, wander the historic streets, poke around Fort Hood, and catch a show at the Rising Tide Theatre.

Then it's on to Bonavista — climb the lighthouse, and keep your eyes peeled for puffins, because yes, they're real, they're adorable, and they live here in droves.

Bunk down at the Artisan Inn or the delightfully named Inn at Happy Adventure. (Say that name out loud. Doesn't it just make the whole trip feel lucky?)

Day 7–11: Gros Morne — Where Nature Shows Off

Finish strong at Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that looks like Earth decided to flex. The alien-red Tablelands, the fjord-like Western Brook Pond, the dramatic Coastal Trail — this is landscape porn, plain and simple.

Base yourself in Woody Point, Norris Point, or Rocky Harbour, with cozy stays like Victorian Manor or Neddies Harbour Inn. Hop on a boat tour, lace up for a hike, and eat well at spots like Black Spruce.

And here's the thing about Newfoundland: the kindness follows you. Ours came from a boat tour captain who, on a whim, arranged a personalized dinner adventure for us — because that's just what people do here. Come for the scenery, stay for the humans.

The Fine Print (Read This Before You Book)

• Rent your car early. Supply is limited, and "I'll figure it out when I land" is a rookie mistake here.

• Go June through August for the sweet spot of good weather, iceberg season, and prime whale-watching.

• Pack layers and rain gear. Newfoundland weather has main character energy and will change its mind four times before lunch.

• Learn about Gander's role on 9/11 before you go — it'll add a whole extra layer of meaning to the hospitality you experience.

• Set your clocks (weirdly). Newfoundland runs on its own time zone — Newfoundland Standard Time, GMT-3:30. Yes, the half hour is intentional. Yes, it's delightful chaos.

What We'd Do Differently Next Time

Even 10 nights isn't enough to see it all (there's always more Rock to explore). Next time on the list:

• Twillingate, the self-proclaimed Iceberg Capital of the World

• The Burin Peninsula, with a side trip via ferry to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon — an honest-to-goodness piece of France, baguettes and all, just off Newfoundland's coast

The Across the Rock itinerary hits the highlight reel — St. John's, Trinity, Bonavista, Gros Morne — and wraps it in the one thing you can't manufacture: genuine Newfoundland warmth. Pack the rain gear, rent the car early, and go fall in love with the friendliest corner of Canada.
