Portugal at Your Own Pace

Lisbon and Porto are classic Portugal destinations — popular for very good reason. Both are lively, walkable cities full of great food, outstanding architecture and neighbourhoods that reward aimless wandering. But the Douro Valley is the piece de resistance. Driving into that valley for the first time is an experience that stops you mid-sentence. The terraced vineyards, the winding river, the absolute quiet — this is a place to slow down, open a bottle and let the world catch up.

The route works in either direction — start with the energy of the cities and end with the calm of the valley, or arrive in the valley first and build toward Lisbon's lively finish. Either way, plan at least six nights in the Douro: enough time to visit wineries properly, take a boat tour on the river and still have evenings to sit by the pool with nothing to do.

One City at a Time

Days 1–3
Porto
A beautiful, walkable city of port houses and coloured azulejo tiles. Explore the Ribeira, cross the iron bridge, take a port tasting in Vila Nova de Gaia and get happily lost in the streets.
Days 4–10
Douro Valley
The most beautiful river valley in Europe — possibly the world. Terraced vineyards, a slow river, exceptional wine and absolute quiet. Six or seven nights here still feels too short.
Days 11–15
Lisbon
A city of hills, neighbourhoods and extraordinary energy. Chiado, Alfama, Pink Street, Sintra on a day trip — Lisbon rewards every wandering hour with something unexpected.

Your Itinerary

A suggested flow through each city — built around wine, culture and the places worth lingering in.

Days 1–3 · Porto
Port Tastings, Boat Rides & Getting Lost in the Best Way
Porto is a city that asks nothing of you except to show up and wander. The Ribeira, the iron bridge, the azulejo-covered train station — and across the river, the port houses of Vila Nova de Gaia, lined up and waiting.
Porto skyline from Vila Nova de Gaia
Day 1
Arrival
Arrive + Explore the Ribeira
Train from the airport is cheap and easy — the direct line drops right into the city centre. The Mercure Porto Centro Aliados is a short walk from São Bento station and ideally located for exploring the Ribeira waterfront on foot. The view across to Vila Nova de Gaia from the lower quay, with the port house signs climbing the hillside, is one of Portugal's great first impressions.
Porto Airport → City (train)Ribeira waterfront★ Mercure Porto Centro Aliados
Stay on the Porto side rather than Vila Nova de Gaia — it is far better for exploring the city and taking day trips by train. São Bento station is a short walk from the hotel. Park once on arrival and leave the car there.
Day 2
Full Day
Food Tour + Porto Exploration
A Taste Porto food tour is one of the best ways to spend a first full day — an excellent introduction to the city through its food, neighbourhoods and stories. In the afternoon, explore São Bento railway station (the azulejo panels are genuinely extraordinary) and wander uphill into the Cedofeita district for independent shops and cafés.
★ Taste Porto food tourSão Bento StationCedofeita neighbourhood
Tapabento, inside São Bento station, is a fun spot for a light meal — eating tapas next to those azulejo panels is a very Porto experience.
Day 3
Full Day
Vila Nova de Gaia — Port Houses + Evening Boat Cruise
Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge on foot for the views, then descend into Vila Nova de Gaia. Graham's is a great first port house — well-organised, interesting tour and excellent tasting. After, pop into smaller houses along the riverside road. The gondola is genuinely fun. End the day with an evening boat cruise on the Douro — the bridges and riverside from the water are beautiful at golden hour.
Dom Luís I Bridge★ Graham's Port HouseVila Nova de Gaia riverside★ Evening boat cruise★ Bolhão Market
Make restaurant reservations in Porto — it is genuinely difficult to walk in as a group, especially in peak season. Book a day ahead at minimum.
Days 4–10 · Douro Valley
Seven Days of Wine, Views & Wonderful Stillness
Words and pictures cannot do justice to the Douro Valley. Driving in for the first time, the terraced vineyards tumbling down to the river will stop you mid-sentence. This is a place to slow down, open a good bottle and let the world catch up.
Rabelo boat on the Douro River with terraced vineyards Wine tasting at Quinta Nova, Douro Valley
Days 4–5
Arrival & Settling In
Arrive in the Valley — Lugar das Letras
Drive into the Douro Valley and allow time for the arrival itself — the road winds down through vineyard terraces and the view keeps getting better. Lugar das Letras (or its sister property Casa de Gouvaes for larger groups) is a standout stay. Carla cooks breakfast every morning and, for week-long stays, dinner too. The views are exceptional and the calm is total. With no street lights for miles, the night skies are extraordinary.
★ Lugar das LetrasCasa de Gouvaes (larger groups)Pinhão village
The road to the villa has no street lights — no one wanted to drive it at night. Stock the kitchen, cook dinner at home with a good bottle and enjoy the stars. It is the right call.
Days 5–7
Wine Tastings
Winery Visits — Book Through Carla or Somm Tours
All wine tastings must be booked in advance and include tours — the wineries insist, and most are genuinely proud of their operations. For the best experience, book a guided day with Somm Tours — João Miguel Koehler focuses on family-run, off-the-beaten-path producers near Pinhão and further toward Spain where the most interesting wines are found. He also helps arrange individual tastings at smaller quintas where English may be limited. Save port tastings for Porto.
★ Wine&Soul★ Quinta da Foz★ Quinta NovaQuinta do Monte TravessoQuinta da Pacheca★ Somm Tours (João Miguel Koehler)
Quinta do Monte Travesso is very off the beaten path — the drive is gorgeous and the owners ended up being wonderfully generous. Ask to be taken there by a guide who knows them. The wine is decent, the experience is exceptional.
Day 6
Full Day
Douro Boat Tour
A public boat tour along the Douro is one of the best days of the trip. The valley looks entirely different from the water — the scale of the terraced vineyards only becomes clear when seen from a boat. A private boat is worth considering if travelling as a group; the public boats are equally scenic and more sociable.
★ Douro public boat tourPinhão
Book the boat tour in advance in summer. Even the public tours fill up. The views mid-river looking back at the terraces are unlike anything else in Portugal.
Day 8
Day Trip
Guimarães — Birthplace of Portugal
Guimarães is the birthplace of Portugal and a great half-day stop — either on the way out of the valley to Porto, or as a day trip. The medieval centre is charming and compact, perfect for lunch and a wander. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies in nearby Lamego is also worth including on a wine tour day.
Guimarães old townLamego — Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies
Guimarães is best as a lunchtime stop on the way from the Douro to Porto rather than a separate day trip. Get there early, have lunch in the medieval centre and continue on.
Days 11–15 · Lisbon
Hills, Neighbourhoods, a Day in Sintra and the Best Piri Piri Chicken You Will Ever Eat
Lisbon is a city of neighbourhoods — Chiado, Bairro Alto, Alfama and beyond. Three to five days is enough to see most of it, plus a day trip to Sintra and a lazy afternoon at the beach in Cascais.
Chiado street, Lisbon Cascais beach, Portugal
Day 11
Arrival
Arrive in Chiado — Wander to Alfama
The drive from the Douro takes time — arrive in Chiado, check in and let the city unfold gradually. Take the public elevators up to the castle area and wander down through Alfama — do not go inside the castle, just explore the extraordinary lanes around it. End the evening in Chiado or Bairro Alto for dinner and a first taste of Lisbon's evening energy.

The AirBnB options from Ana (now at Lisbon Smart Stay) come recommended — great location and easy communication. Book direct on her site.

★ Sintra Jeep Safari — Trip Highlight
Flamingo Experiences Sintra Jeep Safari is the highest-rated day of the entire trip. The morning covers one of Sintra's extraordinary castles, followed by an off-road jeep ride through the hills to the coast, finishing at Cabo da Roca — Europe's westernmost point. The guide is exceptional. Easy train from Lisbon to Sintra, then let the tour take over.
★★ Flamingo Tours Sintra Jeep SafariCabo da RocaSintra by train from Rossio station
Book Flamingo Tours well in advance — it fills up fast and for good reason. This is the single most recommended experience in the entire 15-day trip.
Day 13
Full Day
Food Tour + Wander to Pink Street
Book the Eating Europe Undiscovered Lisbon food tour — a remarkable way to experience the city through its food, wine and local stories in parts of Lisbon most visitors never see. One of the trip highlights. In the afternoon, make your way to the area around Rua Nova do Carvalho — independent wine bars, good shops and a genuinely cool atmosphere. On Saturday evenings there is live music and dancing in the street. It is touristy and also a lot of fun.
★ Eating Europe Undiscovered food tourPink Street areaOrchidea CafeLX Factory (on the way to Belém)
If you have FOMO about missing the famous Pastel de Belém from Belém, don't. You can find great pastéis de nata all over the city. The one at Fábrica da Nata — Pastéis de Nata is mind-blowingly good and far easier to get to.
Day 14
Full Day
Beach Day at Cascais
After two weeks of cities and valleys, a beach day at Cascais is a perfect ending. Easy train from Cais do Sodré station, about 40 minutes. Book beach chairs, swim, have lunch by the water. Cascais town is cute with some good shops. A relaxed, restorative way to spend the final full day before flying home.
★ Cascais beachTrain from Cais do Sodré station
The Banksy permanent museum in Lisbon is worth a few hours if art is your thing. The A Tasquinha Canto do Fado restaurant is excellent for a final dinner — great Portuguese food in a cool neighbourhood.
Driving into the Douro Valley for the first time, you will want to pull over, take a deep breath and take in how the sun hits the hills and the shadows it creates. It is a special beauty — take it all in.

How to Move Through the Route

No car needed in Porto or Lisbon — both cities are excellent on foot and Bolt is cheap and reliable. A rental car is essential for the Douro Valley. The best approach is to fly into one city, pick up the car for the valley leg, and drop it before entering the second city.

📅 When to Go
May to October
A great summer destination. Coastal Lisbon and Porto are warm rather than sweltering. The Douro heat is best managed with a villa with a pool — evenings in the valley are beautiful year-round.
🎟️ Book Ahead
Tours Book Out Fast
Book Flamingo Sintra tours and the Eating Europe food tour several days ahead in peak season. Douro winery tastings all require advance booking — Carla at the villa can arrange these for you.
🚗 Car Tips
Valley Only — Not the Cities
Pick up your rental heading into the Douro and drop it before arriving in Lisbon or Porto. Neither city needs a car and parking in both is difficult. Bolt and the metro handle everything city-side.
🚇 Lisbon Airport
Metro is the Best Option
The Red Line metro runs direct from the airport to downtown in 20-25 minutes for around €1.80 (Viva Viagem card). Bolt is also very affordable at €10-18 to Chiado. Aerobus is a good middle option.
